Monday, the Grand Junction Lions Club gave away thousands of dollars in grants to organizations in the Grand Valley that promise to help our community. NewsChannel 5 spoke with two of the lucky 14 groups that received the generous funds from the Lions Club and found out where some of that money will be going.

More than $90,000 in grants were given away to fund community projects. One of those organizations is the Grand Valley Audubon Society, who is building a handicap trail that more than 1000 students visit a year. "We've noticed more and more people who are coming in wheelchairs or on crutches. We've had several blind students and it was very difficult for them," said Bob Wilson, president of the Audubon Society. Wilson says the new additions paid for by the grant will make their Birding for Everyone trail more inclusive for those with disabilities.

"We have invented, so to speak, a digital player that each sign will have on it that's motion activated, so that when anyone walks up to the sign it will start playing a message which will describe the area," Wilson said.
